Ohio State College of Dentistry
Dr. Ed Maag, a hardworking Cincinnati dentist, was recognized for his Maag-nificent $1 million contribution to the Ohio State College of Dentistry. The College has renamed its screening clinic the Ed Maag D.D.S. '56 Screening Clinic. Because of Dr. Maag's generosity, this gift has established the financial foundation for the college's new building project.
Dr. Maag and his wife Chris have a special connection with Ohio State. On September 25, 1976, Dr. Maag was unfazed after witnessing the #2 ranked Buckeyes fall to the unranked Missouri Tigers. Shortly after he proposed to his wife Christine and the two have been together ever since.
As he presented his million-dollar gift, Dr. Maag said he feels he has proposed again. "I feel like I am marrying the two great loves of my life: dentistry and Ohio State."
Dr. Maag was one of the earliest Cerec users in Cincinnati and technology was a large part of his practice, therefore, he felt strongly about being able to provide the latest technology to treat patients and teach students.
The new screening clinic and technology area was renovated to resemble a private practice environment since all patients visiting the clinic will see this part of the facility.
Dr. Maag knew Ohio State was in need of a new dental school building and was eager to make a gift and jumpstart the new building project. He challenges other dentists to pay it forward to those causes important to them and hopes he will motivate others to give.
Born and raised in a small town near Cincinnati, Dr. Maag is a picture of the "American Dream." In dental school, classmates remember his ability to do more crown preps in one day than the other students did combined. He was very focused on education and learning and even went to Northwestern University for additional training in periodontology. As a son from a large family, he attributes his great work ethic to his humble beginnings and hopes he instilled the same discipline into his ten children.
Dr. Maag still practices at West Chester Dental in Cincinnati after 50 years. "Dentistry is almost like my hobby, I would do it on weekends if I could," said Dr. Maag. "If you enjoy something, why would you want to do anything else?"
