A former past president of the Ohio Dental Association (ODA), Dr. Harold (Hal) Barlow left an unexpected and significant gift to the ODA Foundation after his death in 2002. While he never served as a trustee on the Foundation board, Dr. Barlow was nonetheless an active and staunch supporter of the Foundation.
Recently, the Foundation Trustees learned that he left a trust of over $167,000 to the Claypool Fund, which is one of the ODA Foundation donor advised funds. This fund provides annual scholarships to dental students, hygienists and dental assistants. This gift assists dental students with the increased costs of dental education. Rising tuition costs are one of several challenges Dental Education: Our Legacy - Our Future is trying to curb by raising awareness. Dr. Barlow was committed to supporting the ODA Foundation and strengthening the dental education system. To reflect the generosity of Dr. Barlow and his estate, the name of this fund has been changed to the Claypool Barlow Donor Advised Fund.
Dr. Barlow, who served as ODA president in 1966-67, also established the Faith Barlow Fund in memory of his wife in 1996. This fund is at nearly $22,000 and awards given at the discretion of the board of trustees. Over the years, Dr. Barlow donated over $183,000.
Dr. James Claypool, ODAF board trustee and a long-time friend of Dr. Hal Barlow said, "This was a great contribution. Hal really believed in the Foundation and always worked behind the scenes." Dr. Barlow's daughter, Marcia Griffith, said the legacy to the Foundation was always a wish of her father.
