Donor Spotlight: Gene and Rosemary Dixon
University of Nebraska, College of Dentistry

Dr. F. Gene Dixon and his wife, Rosemary, are true pioneers in supporting oral health education and access to oral health care. Their philanthropic leadership for dental education is a hallmark of that pioneering spirit. The Dixons view their philanthropy as an investment in a better future for all; and they hope their actions will inspire others to support higher education. Their leadership in supporting dental education exemplifies the mission of Dental Education: Our Legacy - Our Future.

The Dixons say the positive impact Gene's dental education has had on their own lives motivates them to help dental students and faculty. A 1947 graduate of the University of Nebraska College Of Dentistry, Dr. Dixon has worked to improve dental education and access to dental health care throughout his long and productive career. In 1955, he founded California-based Delta Dental, one of the first companies to make dental insurance accessible to a wide variety of employers, groups and individuals.

Gene and Rosemary decided that a meaningful way to give back-for today and the future-is through personal philanthropy in support of dental education. They have generously contributed to a number of educational institutions including Gene's alma mater, the University of Nebraska. In addition, because of their interest in international affairs, the Dixons endowed a scholarship for international students at the University of Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco.

At the University of Nebraska, the Dixons established a dental college scholarship to encourage student leadership. Thereafter, they endowed the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry's first chair, the Dr. F. Gene and Rosemary Dixon Chair, awarded to a faculty member excelling in research. In 1999, the Dixons generously contributed to the UNMC College of Dentistry Centennial Campaign to support clinic renovations.

More recently, the Dixons established three new endowed funds at the University of Nebraska Foundation: an expanded scholarship for students demonstrating leadership skills, a Faculty Fellowship that rewards teaching excellence and a general fund for priority needs as determined by the dean of the dental college. The Dixons also have confirmed bequest plans to augment their lifetime giving to the UNMC College of Dentistry.

The Dixons have generously given more than $1.6 million to the University of Nebraska Foundation through outright gifts and planned gift commitments in support of the College of Dentistry. Their careers and philanthropic spirit have provided pioneering leadership and support of dental education and the dental profession.
