Dr. and Mrs. Harold Z. Hirsch, supporters of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Dental Medicine for nearly 30 years, donated $100,000 for the renovation of The Aisic and Riva Hirsch Simulation Laboratory. Dr. Hirsch contributed this gift in honor of his parents, Aisic and Riva Hirsch, both of whom were Holocaust survivors.
In addition to this generous gift, the Hirsch's also challenged alumni and friends to raise $300,000 in contributions to be matched by state funds. Together with other family members, they were able to establish a fund to provide financial support for future maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
This gift assisted the MUSC School of Dentistry in positively impacting one of the many challenges dental schools face today; the escalating costs of keeping facilities and equipment current and state-of-the-art. Dental Education: Our Legacy - Our Future is raising awareness for all of these needs. Support similar to Dr. and Mrs. Hirsch's is a strong example of how donors can collaborate with dental schools and ultimately strengthen the dental education system. This is the essence of Our Legacy - Our Future.
Dr. and Mrs. Hirsch have previously established three scholarships, named the Department of Undergraduate Periodontics in the new clinical education center and have included the college in their estate plans to establish the Felice Hirsch Endowed Chair in Oral Diagnostics and Emergency Services. To date, they have pledged nearly $2 million to Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Hirsch is a 1983 graduate of the college. Mrs. Felice Hirsch is a former faculty member.
About The Aisic and Riva Hirsch Simulation Laboratory
The Aisic and Riva Hirsch Simulation Laboratory is designed to recreate the environment dental students would encounter in an actual, functioning operatory. Opened early 2006, the lab's 58 modern work stations are equipped with air, water and suction capabilities, as well as anatomically correct, ergonomically adjustable manikin heads, complete with lips, cheeks, gums and pre-fitted dentoforms that can be set up to mimic specific oral conditions. These dental simulators can provide real-time feedback and are capable of storing information so instructors can review student performance at a later time and provide constructive commentary.
These features are an integral part of the learning process, because they allow students to practice and refine dental techniques and procedures in a controlled environment, thus maintaining a high level of patient safety. Each work station is also equipped with a monitor so students can observe procedures taking place at the head of the classroom.
The College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina recently dedicated its new state-of-the-art Simulation Laboratory in honor of Aisic and Riva Hirsch, parents of Dr. Harold Hirsch, a 1983 alumnus of the college. Seated: Riva and Aisic Hirsch. Standing (L-R): Cyla Shuster, Sheryl Perlstein, Brendan Perlstein, Kayla Perlstein, Betty Hirsch Lance, Jay Perlstein, Jennifer Hirsch Doobrow, Felice L. Hirsch, Todd Doobrow and Harold Z. Hirsch.
