Medical University of South Carolina
As a member of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Dental Medicine's first graduating class, Dr. Harold Jablon has long felt a strong sense of gratitude about his educational experience he received there. When the opportunity presented itself to contribute to the new MUSC educational facility, Harold and his wife Irene did not hesitate in donating $1 million toward the effort.
Harold Jablon graduated the Medical University of South Carolina in 1971 and went on to work in a Navy clinic in Jacksonville with dentists from other very prominent dental schools. It was then that he realized how much he owed to MUSC. Harold felt his training was as good as, or even better than the other dentists at those prominent schools.
"Over the years, the school has allowed me to build a successful career as a dentist. I feel very fortunate in that respect. I have friends who are 50 or 60 years old who have never thoroughly enjoyed what they do for a living, but I have been able to live my dream," said Harold Jablon.
Giving back to the College of Dental Medicine was essential. The Jablons were concerned with the little financial support the University receives from the state; less than 10 percent on an annual basis. Their efforts, aligned with the Dental Education: Our Legacy - Our Future philosophy, will give students and fellow dentists the opportunity to pursue their goals in dentistry. The new building will be finished in 2009 and will be named after oral surgeon and MUSC President Emeritus Dr. James B. Edwards. On the first floor of the new building, the Jablon Center for Diagnostic Science will bring together the Oral Medicine, Radiology and Treatment Planning Clinics, as well as patient waiting areas. Additionally, the center will be a resource for private dental practitioners statewide who cannot afford to house I-CAT equipment in their smaller practice settings.
Students of dentistry do not always have access to the latest technology and state-of-the-art educational facilities. The Jablons' generous contribution helps to give these people a chance, and with that, the Medical University of South Carolina, as well as Dental Education: Our Legacy - Our Future, applauds them.
