Critical Repairs, More Space and New Amenities
Investments in Parks and Recreation Would Provide Benefits for Residents of All Ages
After years of planning, research and community engagement, the City of Richfield is proposing an $80 million investment plan to improve the condition of its parks system. The plan would enable the city to offer more recreational activities and support major repairs to keep many highly visited attractions open.
The proposed projects aim to build upon Richfield’s Parks and Recreation goal to provide inclusive recreational experiences that promote physical activity, mental wellness and social belonging. In feedback to the city, residents have prioritized investments in park and recreation to help improve the quality of life for residents and enhance our community.
Richfield Community Center
($45 million)
Richfield Community Center: The city is proposing a new facility to replace the current one that would be designed to support more activities for residents of all ages.
Key features of the new building would include:
Designated spaces for community meetings and gatherings
Modern kitchen to support community events
Gyms and sports courts
Indoor walking track
Efficient, modern workspaces for staff
Additional areas for senior, adult, youth and family programming
Increased storage space for equipment and supplies
Wood Lake Nature Center Building ($26 million)
Wood Lake Nature Center Building: The city is proposing a new educational facility to replace the current building that would provide a beautiful, accessible and inspiring setting for residents and visitors to gather and reconnect with nature for many years to come.
Key features of the new building would include:
A new state-of-the-art, energy-efficient facility
Fully accessible facilities and restrooms
New and expanded exhibits and displays
Meeting space to host educational classes and larger community events and celebrations
Hands-on-learning spaces
Capacity to support additional animal ambassadors
Improved air quality
Veterans Park
($9 million)
Veterans Park: With some of the most frequently used amenities in the community, Veterans Park serves thousands of visitors each year. To maintain and improve current offerings at Veterans Park, the city is proposing critical upgrades and investments to the complex.
Key improvements at Veterans Park would include:
Pool: new pool liner and basin, concession area upgrades and new pool filtration and heating systems
Ice Arena: accessibility upgrades to accommodate seniors and those with mobility limitations, replacement of roofing and HVAC updates for Rink #2
Trails: resurfacing trails, vegetation improvements (removal of invasive species), wildlife viewing platform and cohesive park signage
Bandshell: irrigation and gutter repair
Pavilion: replace aging roof and update grading, surfacing and landscaping and extending the patio area
Mini Golf: roof and fascia improvements to the adjacent building
